Can I Buy a Domain That Does Not End With .com?
October 17, 2009
I have heard both sides of this debate from different marketers over the years, but predominately the answer most would give to that question is yes, it does matter. That for some reason, Google gives more “love” to a .com or even a .org domain than to a .info (or even .net) domain.
The people that have said this to me say that it is obvious to see this is true because when you look at the search results you get when you enter a search phrase into a search engine, the page one sites are almost always going to be .com or .org.
Yes, this is generally accurate, but I have another side to that statement that you must consider when deciding which extension you should purchase.
There are many, many, many more .com and .org sites on the Internet than there are .info. This fact on it’s own could explain why the search results generally have .com and .org domain names in their top listings. I am not saying that it is not possible that the search engines prefer .com or .org, I am simply bringing up a point. That is that .com and .org domain extensions should be on page one of the search results most of the time, there are 10’s, even 100’s of thousands more websites with a .com or .org domain extension.
I myself have way more .com websites. I like them because when people enter domain names into their address bar they usually to type .com. So, by just purchasing a .com you can be sure they go to your site. If the website you wanted in a .com has a .info available and you purchase it, then when the person goes to enter it into their address bar, it is likely that unless they were actually attentive, they will be typing in .com. And so rather than arriving at your website, they would land on someone else’s.
I want to point out that I do have some .info extensions however and as far as a search engine optimization stand point I have found them to rank in the search engines equally as well as a .com website. Therefore, for search engine optimization reasons it does not seem to matter which extension you buy. The search engine optimization side comes down more to your keywords and in-bound links than to the extension you purchase.
Therefore, it comes down to your preference. Do you care ifthey unintentionally type in .com rather than .info (or even .net)? How you answer this question will help you chose which domain extension you go with.
