The Harry Potter novels and movies have an avid following in and outside the USA

June 20, 2009

I am deeply fascinated by the high universal success of the Harry Potter stories. The Harry Potter novels were written by the UK writer J.K. Rowling. She saw the light of day on 31 July 1965. Her complete name is Joanne Rowling. But she writes under the abbreviation J.K. Rowling because initially her publishing company thought it was a helpful idea not to reveal the point that she is female. The publishing company thought it could have a negative effect on the sales numbers if everybody instantly sees that the writer was female. Consequently, instead of using her first name she used two letters. As she has no middle name she took Kathleen as basis for the K. in her short form. Kathleen is the name of her fathers mother.

The first Harry Potter novel - Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone - was publicized in 1997 in the UK. Very funny is the point that only 1,000 units of the first novel were publicized at the beginning. The original title of the book was not Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, but Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. But when the novel was publicized to the American market in 1998, it was publicized as Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone.

After that J.K. invented several more Harry Potter novels. Today the Harry Potter series consists of seven stories. These are:

  • Vol. 1: Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone
  • Vol. 2: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  • Vol. 3: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  • Vol. 4: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  • Vol. 5: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  • Vol. 6: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  • Vol. 7: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

The Harry Potter books have been translated into over sixty languages and have been published in a lot of countries. Besides the big success in the United States of America and the United Kingdom, Harry Potter is also quite favored in the EU. The Harry Potter books have been published in Germany under these headers:

I must admit that I did not have the time to read all those stories. But there are fans who know them all, which is very remarkable and is part of the huge success.
